Birch Burl, Belt Buckle

I had lost track of this belt for a long time, but Barb found it in one of our suitcases the other day.
Quite awhile ago a friend of mine gave me some chunks of Birch burl. The original burl was from a large burl ball about 2 feet in diameter, protruding from an 8” diameter tree.

I ended up making quite a few buckles as gifts, & this is all I have left to show you.

Wood magazine had an article about, ”Making wooden belt buckles” in their Dec. 1987, Issue #20, Page 80. If you want to look it up.

I started out sawing 3/8” slabs with my Bandsaw. Then you cut out the shape of the buckle.

The rest of the finishing was done mostly with a belt sander. You fasten a block to hold on to it, with hot melt glue, or double stick tape

Some I made where rectangles, oval, round, & square.

This one 1 7/8” wide X 2 3/4” long

The final sanding is done by hand. This one has a couple of coats satin polyurethane rubbed in.

The belt buckle hardware can be bought in various places, such as hobby stores.
